Senate Holds Emergency Closed-Door Session Over Local Government Autonomy

Today, Senator Tony Nwoye raised a critical issue in the Senate, calling for an immediate halt to actions by some state governments that are violating the constitution and a Supreme Court ruling on local government financial autonomy. He warned that certain state governments are using their Houses of Assembly to pass laws that undermine local government independence.

The motion, supported by 12 other senators, accused state governments of bypassing the court ruling by requiring local governments to send their funds to state-controlled accounts, using names like “State/LGA Joint Account” and “Local Government Joint Security Trust Account.”

As tensions rose, the Senate President, Godswil Akpabio, consulted with other senators, leading the Senate to enter an emergency closed-door session to discuss the matter further.
