NCC Backtracks on Starlink Controversy, Says Press Release Was Issued in Error

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has retracted a press statement it recently issued about the operations of Starlink, a satellite internet provider.

In a message sent to media outlets on Tuesday, the NCC admitted the statement was released in error and requested editors and journalists to remove any related publications.

“Please note that the press statement on Starlink was issued in error. It is hereby WITHDRAWN. If already published, kindly REMOVE,” said Kunle Azeez, the NCC’s Manager of Media Relations.

Earlier, Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, had announced plans to take action against Starlink for raising its subscription fees in Nigeria without regulatory approval.

Starlink recently informed its customers of a price increase, raising the monthly subscription fee by 97%, from N38,000 to N75,000. New users would also have to pay more for the Starlink installation kit, which went up from N440,000 to N590,000, a 34% increase.

The NCC had previously said it was surprised by the price changes, as the commission had not yet approved Starlink’s request for a price adjustment.
