by The Director General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency Deaconess Mrs Abasioffiong Offiong has commence the massive decontamination and destruction of the State’s routine immunization and Covid-19 vaccines empty vials in accordance with local regulations and processes currently being used to dispose of regulated medical waste.
Since September 2022 when the last empty vials destruction took place, we have implemented SCALES 3.0 campaign with many Covid-19 vaccines, Integrated Measles campaign, Rota and Routine Immunization intensification campaign.
Empty vials have been retrieved from the 18LGAs of the State as such, approximately 98,628 empty Vials were therefore decontaminated by boiling and burning before they were properly buried.
The Agency Boss stated that this exercise was necessary because, Vials to avoid contamination cannot be reuse due to the risk of introducing bacterial contamination to avoid the outbreak of viral or bacterial diseases.
“Reusing this Vials I must say is a recipe for disaster. There is always a tiny chance that one of the two Vials has previously been contaminated, which would contaminate a shot that combined their contents, she added.
