Fuel Subsidy Was Already Gone Before Tinubu Took Office, Dogara Explains

Former House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, has said that President Bola Tinubu is not responsible for removing the fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels TV, Dogara clarified that while Tinubu announced that “subsidy is gone” after his election, the policy was already set in motion before Tinubu took office. He explained that the 2023 budget, passed by the National Assembly, did not include provisions for subsidy payments.

Dogara acknowledged that Nigerians are feeling the effects of the subsidy removal but emphasized that it was necessary for the country’s progress. He stated that people must focus on finding solutions rather than just discussing Nigeria’s problems.

“In this case, there was no budget for subsidy, and anyone claiming that Tinubu suspended it is mistaken,” Dogara said. “Subsidy had already been removed before he became president.”

Tinubu had announced the removal of the subsidy on May 29, 2023, during his inauguration, explaining that there was no provision for subsidy payments in the national budget from June 2023 onward.
