Updated: NLC Demands for N794,000 Minimum Wage for South West Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has proposed a new national minimum wage of N794,000 for workers in the South West geopolitical zone.

Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Chairperson of the Lagos State NLC, presented this recommendation to the government on Thursday during the South-West Geo-Political Zone Public Hearings organized by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (TCNMW), chaired by Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy. The event took place at the LTV Ground in Agindingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

Sessi emphasized the urgent need for a wage increase due to the escalating cost of living across various economic sectors, highlighting the necessity for a sustainable raise in the minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The unions strongly criticized the stance of some governors who claim inability to pay the minimum wage, labeling it as “unacceptable.”
