Taxi Drivers In Calabar Protest Against Continuous Tax Collection

It was drama Calabar as Taxi drivers took their protest to the streets.

According to sources, the Taxi drivers gathered at Rabana junction preparing to take the protest to the Governor’s office. 

The chairman of the taxi driver said they are protesting against the contentious collection of taxes and levies even after the governor Sir Ben Ayade had kicked against it. 

He stated thus, “The problem we have on the road is that the Excellency have said that there will be no taxation for low income earners. But, along the line, we saw people calling themselves tax force under Ministry of Transportation. We have met the Commissioner for Transportation and he said he is not aware of them. Then, there are other ones that said they come from the Ministry of Environment. We don’t know them, whether the environment has left its grass and come to the road. So, for this reason, the impound vehicles belonging to some of our drivers and charge them forty thousand Naira, thirty thousand Naira and ten thousand Naira. For this reason, drivers have decided to show that they belong to the chains of productions. Without the drivers, they will be no work. We do not impound anyone’s car, if we catch you as a driver carrying anyone, we only open your vehicle for the passengers to go. We want the people concern to see that we have a role in the society. We are matching to the Governor’s office to tell him about it.”

Consequently, people were left moving by foot around the area because taxis refused o carry passengers.
