A former Judge of the International Court of Justice, Hague, Prince Bola Ajibola, has decried the present state of the nation’s economy and urged members of the National Assembly to tackle the current economic realities through the on-going constitutional amendment process.
He said this on Friday in his presentation while addressing the members of the House of Representatives on constitution review who were on a three-day retreat in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State with the theme “The Imperative of Constitution Review/Amendment in
Nation Building.”
Ajibola noted that it was only logical for the constitution to be reframed to accommodate the realities facing Nigerians, as the country had never witnessed the current degree of recession, oppression and depression.
He further said that some workers had lost their jobs, and there was no ‘free money’ anymore, as everyone must work hard to earn his or her living.
He said, “We never had recession. We never had oppression and depression. It is now happening. There’s no money in government like before, therefore, it is now a necessity that we must work for our earning and for what we can get out of our sweat and blood.
“We need to look, work very hard to be able to get anywhere. Easy money is no longer there. It is now a necessity that we must work hard for our earnings.
“Stealing money and corruption must find their ways out. We must now be ready to work hard in order to ensure that we place our country on a rightful position, where it must bé all the time.
” The Constitution must be adjusted. The most important aspect of it is that the Constitution needs to be adjusted , amended and corrected in order to address the drastic situation we are in now.
We have never had it so bad. We have never been in a situation of this nature. We must look at our Constitution, particularly in the areas that have to do with our economy. A lot of people have been retrenched all over the place. A lot of people are now without any job
