Eniola Bolaji has etched her name in history as the first African athlete to win a medal in Para-Badminton, securing a bronze for Nigeria in the Women’s Singles SL3 category.
On Monday morning, Bolaji triumphed over her Ukrainian opponent, Oksana Kozyna, with a commanding 2-0 (21-9, 21-9) victory, earning Nigeria its first Paralympics medal in Paris.
Despite aiming for gold, Bolaji faced a setback in the semi-finals on Sunday, where she lost 2-0 (16-21, 17-21) to China’s Zuxian Xiao. However, she made a strong comeback, clinching the bronze medal on Monday.
This victory will be celebrated by many as Nigeria ends its medal drought following disappointing performances at the Olympic Games and the recently concluded World U-20 Athletics Championship.
