The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has called on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to include skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs in its curriculum.
Speaking at the NDA’s 22nd Convocation Lecture in Kaduna on Tuesday, Ahmed suggested that cadets should be trained in practical skills, such as agriculture, to enhance their self-reliance and employability. He noted that the large amount of land available at the NDA could be used for agricultural production, giving cadets valuable hands-on experience.
He also recommended that the NDA’s Post-Graduate School introduce a skill acquisition program for its students. This, he said, would give them practical skills that complement their academic knowledge and prepare them for the job market.
Ahmed emphasized that skill training is important for national security, saying, “When people have something productive to do, they are less likely to engage in harmful activities.”
The Commandant of the NDA, Major General John Ochai, thanked Ahmed for the insightful lecture, adding that skill acquisition would help graduates contribute to the economy and improve their personal development.
