The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the sale of fake condoms called Foula Condoms. These products are not registered for use in Nigeria.
NAFDAC officials found the unregistered condoms in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State, during a routine inspection of registered condoms.
The agency said the packaging of Foula condoms is not in English, which is another sign that they are illegal. It emphasized that condoms are important for preventing unintended pregnancies and protecting against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, if condoms are of poor quality, they may break or leak, making them ineffective.
NAFDAC has instructed its staff to find and remove these unregistered condoms from stores. They are advising importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be careful and only buy medical products from licensed suppliers.
Anyone who suspects they have seen these fake condoms or any other low-quality medical products should report it to NAFDAC by calling 0800-162-3322 or emailing sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
Healthcare professionals and patients are also encouraged to report any problems with medical products to NAFDAC through their website or the Med-safety app available for download.
