by As the world marks International Day of Children in Broadcasting, with this year’s theme, focused on putting an End to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), children in Cross River State have called on the Government at all levels to put an end to the harmful practice, which they say leaves lasting irredeemable damages in the lives of children, especially the girl children.
According to data released by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, dated 1st of March, 2022, Nigeria accounts for about one-quatre of the estimated 115-130 million circumcised women in the world.
Lending their voice to the harmful practice, a few teenage girls who spoke with FAD FM on Sunday stated some of the negative effects of FGM on females and beckoned on all well-meaning Nigerians to help put an end to female genital mutilation.
“FGM has no health benefits, and it harms girls and women in many ways; it can lead to severe pains, excessive bleeding, genital tissue swelling, infections e.g., tetanus, urinary problems, shock and even
death. We, therefore, call on the government at all levels to help put an end to this practice.” They said.
