ASUU Ready For Strike, Raises Opposition to IPPIS

Following the decision of the Federal Government to stop salaries of lecturers who have not enrolled in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, this week, The Academic Staff Union of Universities will make vital decisions whether or not to announce to its members to proceed on a nationwide strike.

In a meeting held on Saturday and Sunday by the ASUU National Executive Council at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, where issues such as the IPPIS and the Federal Government’s failure to honour the 2009 agreements were discussed.

It was also made known that the Federal Government this week will pay February salaries of its workers, including university lecturers, who had registered on the IPPIS.

In an interview on Thursday, at a management retreat held in Kano, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zanaib Ahmed had said lecturers who did not enroll for the IPPIS would not get their February salaries.

Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), The President of Nigeria had in October last year directed all Federal Government workers to enroll in the IPPIS to ensure transparency. This directive was kicked against by ASSU on the basis that it negated the principle of autonomy of the universities

According to the finance minister on Thursday, only 55 per cent of ASUU members had registered for the IPPIS, saying, “The ones that have not are not getting their February salary.”

A from a reliable source at the Enugu meeting of ASUU, the lecturers had been asked to go on strike if their salaries were stopped.

While interviewing the ASUU chairman at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Dr. Christian Opata said lecturers are only waiting for instructions from the leadership of ASSU at the national level.

It was therefore stated on Saturday during the meeting that by the end of Sunday’s meeting, the body will come up with a decision.

The ASUU branch chairman said the integrated payroll system was defective and full of corruption.
