Army Chief Expresses Concern Over Drug Abuse Among Soldiers Fighting Terrorists

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has raised concerns about the increasing cases of drug abuse among soldiers deployed to fight terrorists. He expressed this concern on Tuesday in Sokoto during a one-day seminar on “Warrior Ethos” organized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, represented by Brig. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, the acting General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, said the seminar aimed to address drug abuse among soldiers and improve their operational effectiveness.

He assured troops in Operation Hadarin Daji of continued support, including necessary logistics and guidance to help them succeed in their missions. Lagbaja noted that the Nigerian Army is constantly updating its strategies, both military and non-military, to tackle various challenges.

The seminar focused on improving the mindset of soldiers, emphasizing warrior ethos, combat readiness, and the dangers of drug and substance abuse. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja urged commanders to come up with new ideas to manage soldiers better and improve their readiness for battle.

Maj. Gen. Zakari Abubakar, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, assured that the department would continue its efforts to support the COAS’s command goals. He explained that the seminar was designed to enhance leadership skills and combat drug abuse among soldiers.
