Anambra LG Secretariat in Ukpo Ravaged by Fire

A segment of the Dunukofia Local Government Area secretariat in Ukpo, Dunukofia, Anambra State, was engulfed in flames as a fire broke out late on Wednesday, reportedly sparked by bush burning near the premises.

This incident adds to a string of fire outbreaks recently recorded in Anambra State, including incidents at the Timber Market in Nnewi and behind the Sinai Gas Plant in Awka, the state capital.

The fire, which erupted at various times on Tuesday, raged for hours but was eventually brought under control with the intervention of the Anambra State Fire Service.

Confirming the Wednesday incident at the LG secretariat, Anambra State Fire Chief Martin Agbili stated that the blaze began around 6:53 pm.

Agbili elaborated, “At about 18:53hrs (6.53 pm) on Wednesday, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a significant fire outbreak at Dunukofia.

“Immediately, we dispatched our fire truck and courageous firefighters to the scene, where we battled, contained, and extinguished the fire.

“The fire was ignited by a bush fire started by unknown individuals, which spread to the local government council secretariat.

“During the firefighting operations, we successfully controlled and extinguished the fire, preventing extensive damage to the local government council premises.

“We withdrew from the fire scene around 20:30hrs after effectively combating the fire and stabilizing the situation.

“At this time of dry season and harmattan, it is imperative that we clear all surrounding bushes to prevent such incidents. Fire is a deadly force, but prevention is key.”
