by Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has accused some vigilante operatives in the state of collaborating with criminals, undermining government efforts to address insecurity.
Soludo alleged that these operatives have formed alliances with criminal elements, allowing them to infiltrate the ranks of the security outfit.
Speaking in Awka during a meeting with traditional rulers and community leaders, Soludo expressed concern over this situation, highlighting his reluctance to approve the monthly payments of vigilante operatives.
He emphasized the need for vigilance and accountability among traditional rulers and community leaders, warning them to ensure that vigilante operatives under their watch behave appropriately.
Soludo questioned the efficacy of vigilante leaders who do not reside in the communities they serve, calling for better command and control structures.
He also urged communities to take more proactive measures to improve security, particularly in addressing the issue of cultism and insecurity in Ihiala Local Government Area.
The governor reiterated his government’s commitment to addressing security challenges, noting that Ihiala receives significant investment in security infrastructure.
The meeting, which focused on security, environmental, and community development issues, began with a tribute to the late President-General of the Umuoji community and the victims of the Odu-Igbo tragedy in Ochanja Market, Onitsha.
Established in 1999 in response to rising crime rates, the Anambra State Vigilante Group was formalized by the Anambra State House of Assembly in 2004 to empower private groups to combat crime in the state.
