Ousted Kaduna Speaker, Yusuf Liman, Reclaims Position After Re-election

The former Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Liman who was previously removed from office, has regained his position following his victory in Saturday’s by-election in the state.

According to The PUNCH, Liman, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 18,068 votes during the re-run election, defeating Solomon Katuka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 17,404 votes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kaduna subsequently issued Certificates of Return to Liman and other winners of the by-election.

Among those who received Certificates of Return were Haruna Barnabas (APC, Chawai State Constituency), Jesse Tanko (APC, Chikun State Constituency), and Nura Likoro (PDP, Kudan State Constituency).

Following his swearing-in, Liman was nominated and unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the State House of Assembly during a plenary session attended by the newly sworn-in members.

Expressing gratitude to his colleagues, Liman pledged to work collaboratively with the executive arm of government to advance democracy and promote the state’s development.

He stated, “Let us reaffirm our dedication to democracy, justice, and progress. Let us remember the power bestowed upon us by the people of Kaduna comes with a profound responsibility to uphold their interests and aspirations at all times.”

Liman, who represents the Makera constituency, regained his position as Speaker after his previous election was nullified by the appeal court in Abuja in November 2023, leading to a mandated rerun in five polling units within the Makera constituency.
