In a significant move towards safeguarding artistic freedom, the Nigerian chapter of the Pan African Network for Artistic Freedom (PANAF) is gearing up to host an insightful chatroom discussion on January 30. This event, led by PANAF’s partner, the Creative Artist Network (CAN), is scheduled to commence at 2 pm (WAT) in the Chatroom section of the PANAF website, focusing on the critical issue of Copyright Infringement and Piracy within Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment industry.

Bringing together a diverse panel of industry experts, legal professionals, and stakeholders, the discussion aims to unravel the complex challenges posed by copyright infringement and piracy in the Nigerian entertainment sector. Key areas of focus include the examination of legal frameworks and enforcement, the impact of technological advancements on digital piracy, economic implications, the role of public awareness and education, and opportunities for international collaboration.

This event follows the landmark signing of the Copyright Bill 2022 into law by Former President Muhammadu Buhari on March 17, 2023. The new Copyright Act is designed to protect authors’ rights, ensure recognition for intellectual efforts, and enhance the capabilities of the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

About PANAF (The Pan African Network for Artistic Freedom)

PANAF, a three-year initiative launched in November 2021 by Selam with support from the Swedish Arts Council, responds to the need for an active and inclusive regional voice in the creative sector. This initiative collaborates with advocates for artistic rights at both regional and national levels, raising awareness of incidents involving violations of artistic freedom. Implemented with the support of partner organizations across various countries, including Nigeria, Gambia, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ethiopia, PANAF envisions expansion into more countries and regions in the future.

The Chatroom section of the PANAF website serves as a safe space for creatives to engage in discussions about artistic rights, good governance, and socio-political issues without the fear of being profiled.
