Justice Tanko Muhammad, Nigeria’s Chief Justice, as a result of the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the country, has called on Chief Judges across the country to hasten up trials and ensure the decongestion of correctional centres.
Although, as a means of combating the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria and the need to curtail its spread, the CJN had ordered the closure of courts all over the nation.
Judges were, as a result of the situation, urged to embrace virtual sittings to hear cases to speed up the release of verdicts and avoid unnecessary waste of time.
As a means to hasten or further fast-track cases and decongestion correctional centres, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad in his message to the judges advised, that judges consider both conditional or unconditional release of Awaiting Trial Persons who for any reason have spent six years or more in custody.
This he said will reduce the spread of this deadly disease.
