Wike Refutes NEMA Report, Dismisses Abuja Suicide Bomber Claim

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) that Monday’s explosion near the Mogadishu Army Cantonment in Abuja was the result of a suicide bombing.

During an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the FCT on Tuesday, Wike clarified that the explosion was caused by an individual who unknowingly transported explosives stolen from a quarry. The device detonated while in transit, resulting in a blast that injured one passerby.

“This was not a terrorist attack or suicide bombing,” Wike stated. “Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Nigeria. This administration remains committed to sustaining that status with continued vigilance and security investments.”

Wike’s remarks stand in contrast to NEMA’s earlier report, which suggested that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber attempting to infiltrate the army barracks. According to NEMA, the bomber, strapped with an improvised explosive device (IED), was killed instantly when the device detonated before he could enter the military facility. One civilian reportedly sustained injuries and was evacuated to the National Hospital by the police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a full-scale forensic investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.

As investigations continue, the FCT administration emphasizes its commitment to maintaining Abuja’s security and urges residents to remain vigilant.
