Uber has begun inviting its Atlanta-based customers to sign up for early access to a new robotaxi service, powered by Waymo, as both companies gear up for a commercial launch in the city this summer.
This development follows a joint announcement made in September 2024, when Uber and Waymo revealed plans to introduce autonomous ride-hailing services in both Austin and Atlanta. In March 2025, they officially rolled out the “Waymo on Uber” service in Austin, shortly after launching an interest list for users. A similar process is now underway in Atlanta.
The companies confirmed on Tuesday that the public will be able to start hailing Waymo’s self-driving vehicles in Atlanta within the coming months.
As part of their collaboration, Uber and Waymo split key responsibilities. Uber oversees fleet operations, including vehicle charging, maintenance, cleaning, and integrating robotaxi access through its app. Waymo, on the other hand, manages the autonomous driving technology and provides rider support.
Initially, the robotaxi fleet will consist of Waymo’s autonomous Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, which will be accessible exclusively through the Uber platform.
This partnership marks a significant shift from their contentious history. Back in 2018, Waymo and Uber were embroiled in a high-profile legal battle over trade secrets, which was settled that February. Since then, both companies have followed different paths toward commercializing autonomous transportation.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has spent the past several years refining its self-driving technology and expanding its commercial operations in cities such as Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Uber, meanwhile, sold its autonomous vehicle division (Uber ATG) to Aurora in 2020 and pivoted to forming strategic partnerships. To date, Uber has signed agreements with over a dozen autonomous vehicle companies for services ranging from ride-hailing to delivery and freight. Recent milestones include a December 2024 launch of robotaxi rides in Abu Dhabi with WeRide and ongoing integration of Waymo vehicles into the Uber app in Phoenix.
Atlanta is set to become the latest addition to Uber and Waymo’s autonomous service map. The initial service area will span 65 square miles, including neighborhoods like Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View, with plans to expand over time.
