Washington, D.C. – Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, USAID Administrator Samantha Power has reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to addressing this global crisis.
Power highlighted the alarming statistics on gender-based violence, including the disproportionate impact on women and girls during conflicts and humanitarian crises. She stressed the need for urgent action to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.
To combat this issue, the U.S. government has significantly increased funding for programs addressing gender-based violence, with a focus on prevention, protection, and prosecution. This includes investments in survivor services, women’s empowerment, and addressing root causes like harmful social norms.
In addition to these efforts, USAID is working to leverage technology to address gender-based violence in the digital age. Through initiatives like Women LEAD, the agency aims to empower women to use digital tools safely and responsibly and to advocate for their rights online.
As the 16 Days of Activism campaign begins, USAID calls on the international community to join the fight against gender-based violence. By working together, we can create a safer and more equitable world for all.
