In a dramatic turn of events at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja, security operatives thwarted an attempt by thugs to disrupt the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting. The incident underscores the escalating internal conflicts within the party.
According to reports, Emmanuel Okoronkwo, an aide to ousted PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, led a group of thugs to barricade the entrances of Wadata Plaza, the party’s headquarters. Their objective was to prevent NWC members from accessing the premises for their scheduled meeting. Eyewitnesses noted that the thugs created a hostile environment, denying entry to party members, staff, and journalists.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were swiftly deployed to the scene. Their timely intervention led to the dispersal of the thugs and the arrest of Okoronkwo, restoring order at the venue.
This incident unfolds against the backdrop of a deepening leadership crisis within the PDP. Following legal battles over the rightful holder of the National Secretary position, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld Hon. Sunday Ude-Okoye as the legitimate officeholder. Despite this, Senator Anyanwu continues to assert his claim, a dispute that has further polarized party members.
The NWC meeting, chaired by Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum, proceeded amidst heightened security. Discussions focused on strategic plans and future congress dates, highlighting the party’s efforts to navigate its current challenges.
Political analysts observe that the arrest of a high-profile aide like Okoronkwo signals the party’s determination to maintain order and address internal disputes decisively. As the legal and political battles intensify, stakeholders are keenly watching how the PDP will resolve its leadership impasse and restore unity within its ranks.
