Observing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the 16 Days of Activism
Today, November 25, 2024, the world marks an important milestone—the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day also kicks off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
A Call to Action
Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, made a press statement reiterating the United States’ commitment to combating gender-based violence. He urged the global community to join in strengthening efforts to prevent and respond to such violence.
Safe from the Start ReVisioned Initiative
Secretary Blinken highlighted the “Safe from the Start ReVisioned” initiative, which aims to enhance gender-based violence prevention and response efforts from the onset of emergencies. The initiative focuses on risk mitigation, response efforts, and building expertise in tackling gender-based violence.
Significant U.S. Investment
In 2024, the U.S. government allocated over $273 million to gender-based violence prevention and response in emergency situations. This substantial funding demonstrates the country’s dedication to addressing this critical issue and supporting survivors.
Global Impact
This observance serves as a reminder that gender-based violence affects everyone and requires collective action. The United States, in collaboration with partner governments, civil society, and survivors, is committed to making significant progress in eliminating gender-based violence and creating a safer, more equitable world for all.
In essence, these observances not only highlight the challenges ahead but also the collaborative efforts needed to overcome them.
