Nintendo has unveiled its upcoming Virtual Game Cards, a groundbreaking feature designed to enhance the portability of digitally downloaded games across different devices. With the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on the way, these new Virtual Game Cards will allow players to easily transfer their existing digital Switch games to the new console.
Currently, Nintendo Switch games can be purchased either as physical game cards, similar to traditional cartridges, or as digital downloads. While physical game cards can be easily swapped between devices, transferring digital games has traditionally been more difficult. However, with the introduction of Virtual Game Cards, this process is about to get much simpler.

Slated for release in late April, Virtual Game Cards will allow players to treat their digital downloads like physical cartridges. The new feature will make it possible to easily migrate games from one device to another, as long as the devices are connected locally the first time a game is transferred.
In addition to cross-device portability, Virtual Game Cards will include a lending feature, enabling users to share their games with others in their Nintendo Family Group. This group can include up to eight members, and users can lend one game at a time to each person. After a fourteen-day borrowing period, the game will automatically return to the lender’s account.
While Nintendo has yet to confirm a release date for the Switch 2, the upcoming console is expected to make use of the Virtual Game Cards, giving players the ability to carry over their digital games from the previous Switch. This new feature is expected to simplify the migration of digital content, adding more flexibility for users transitioning to the new device.
Fans are eagerly awaiting more information about the Nintendo Switch 2, and a Nintendo Direct livestream scheduled for April 2 is expected to provide further details about the console’s release.
