Meta spotted testing AI-generated comments on Instagram

In recent years, Meta has introduced various AI-powered features across its apps, including some controversial experiments like AI-generated characters with unique profiles and personalities—an initiative later abandoned due to user concerns over its creepiness. Now, Meta is testing a new feature that could further change how users interact on Instagram by offering AI-generated comment suggestions.

AI-Generated Comments on Instagram: How It Works Jonah Manzano, a social media tester, recently discovered a new feature on Instagram called “Write with Meta AI,” which allows users to receive AI-generated suggestions for comments on posts. After accessing the feature by tapping the pencil icon near the text bar under a post, users will be presented with three comment suggestions based on the image.

For example, if a post shows someone smiling with a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments like “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” If users aren’t satisfied with the first batch, they can refresh for more options.

Meta’s Ongoing AI Integration A Meta spokesperson confirmed to newsmen that the company frequently tests new features involving Meta AI, which can be used across various parts of its platforms, including comments, feeds, groups, and search, to improve user experience. While this feature has only been spotted by a limited number of users, Meta previously tested AI-generated comments on Facebook, suggesting they may be preparing to expand this across other platforms.

User Reactions: Is AI-Generated Feedback Welcome? The response to AI-generated comments on Instagram has been mixed. Some users feel this feature detracts from the platform’s authenticity, worrying that it may encourage robotic, inauthentic engagement over genuine conversation. Many Instagram users have expressed a preference for organic, personal comments rather than automated responses, fearing that AI could make the platform feel less genuine.

While it’s unclear whether Meta will roll out this feature more widely, the company has continued to experiment with AI in social media interactions, indicating that this may just be the beginning of AI-driven changes on Instagram.

Stay tuned for updates on the AI-driven features Meta continues to test as it shapes the future of social media interactions.
