Meta has officially launched its new video-editing app, Edits, positioning it as a global competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut. Available now on iOS and Android, Edits is designed to help content creators streamline their video production process with a suite of powerful, AI-driven tools.
The app allows users to manage video concepts, find inspiration, and create dynamic content using advanced features like green screen, timeline editing, automatic captions, and audio enhancements. At launch, all features are completely free, but Meta has indicated that future updates may introduce premium options.
Meta first hinted at Edits in January 2025, shortly after CapCut was temporarily pulled from U.S. app stores due to regulatory tensions surrounding TikTok. Although CapCut has since returned, ongoing concerns about TikTok’s presence in the U.S. provide Meta with a strategic opportunity to position Edits as a strong alternative for creators.

Unlike CapCut, Edits allows users to export videos without a watermark, a feature that’s typically restricted to paid plans in other apps. It also emphasizes flexibility, enabling creators to craft content not only for Instagram and Facebook, but also for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and other platforms.
Edits offers a wide range of tools including Ideas, where users can jot down concepts for future videos, and Projects, which helps organize and manage ongoing edits. Inspirations allows users to explore trending audio, while tools like Green Screen and Animate provide visual enhancements. The app also includes a Timeline feature for arranging clips, Cutouts for object isolation with motion tracking, and auto-captioning for added accessibility. Users can select music from Instagram’s library and share content directly to social platforms or export it for use elsewhere.
Looking ahead, Meta plans to expand Edits with AI-powered tools like Modify, which lets creators transform the visual style of their videos, and Keyframes, which enables precise control over motion, rotation, and scaling. Collaboration features will soon allow creators to work with brands or peers on draft content. The company also plans to expand its media library with new fonts, transitions, filters, voice effects, and music options.
In addition to creative tools, Edits includes built-in insights to help users understand how their content performs and what adjustments could improve reach and engagement. With this comprehensive approach, Meta aims to make Edits the go-to video creation tool for today’s short-form content creators.
