Manchester United in Talks to Sign Matheus Cunha: Ruben Amorim Eyes Brazilian Star for No.10 Role

Manchester United have initiated positive preliminary discussions with Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha regarding a potential summer transfer to Old Trafford. Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to bolster United’s attacking options following a challenging season in which the team scored just 38 Premier League goals. Cunha, who has been in impressive form for Wolves, contributing 32 goals and 13 assists in 87 appearances, is viewed as a strong fit for Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has a release clause of €75 million (£64.3 million) in his contract, making him a significant investment for any interested club. Despite signing a new 4.5-year deal in February, Cunha appears open to a move, especially given recent tensions with fans and his desire for career advancement.

To facilitate this transfer, Manchester United are considering selling academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho, who has made 137 appearances and contributed 46 goals or assists, is seen as a financially beneficial transfer option due to Profit and Sustainability Rules that consider academy graduates as 100% profit. Although he signed a five-year contract in April 2023, Garnacho is reportedly open to leaving the club, partly due to not fitting into Amorim’s tactical setup.

Cunha’s versatility and familiarity with the Premier League make him an attractive target. He has been Wolves’ standout player this season with 16 goals and four assists. Manchester United have reportedly informed him that he would play in the No.10 role at Old Trafford. Despite interest from other top clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, Cunha favors a move to Manchester United.

While Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Vitor Pereira hopes to retain Cunha, the player’s ambition and United’s interest suggest a potential transfer in the upcoming window.
