Manchester United fans pepper sprayed by French police after Lyon match

Manchester United is investigating reports that its supporters were subjected to pepper spray and tear gas by French police following the club’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw against Lyon at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

After the match, United fans were reportedly detained within the stadium for approximately an hour—a standard procedure intended to prevent post-match altercations. However, tensions escalated when access to restrooms was allegedly denied, leading some fans to attempt to leave the area. In response, French police reportedly deployed pepper spray and tear gas. Videos circulating online depict distressed fans coughing and shielding their faces, with some alleging that tear gas was also used.

The Rhône prefecture stated that tear gas was deployed after fans in the away section attempted to breach police security measures and threw projectiles. Authorities described their actions as “proportionate” and necessary to restore calm.

Football Supporters Europe (FSE) criticized the police response, stating that denying fans access to toilets provoked tensions unnecessarily. FSE’s executive director, Ronan Evain, condemned the use of tear gas as an inhumane and disproportionate response. The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) echoed similar concerns, suggesting systemic issues with French police operations at football events.

Manchester United has yet to issue an official statement but is reportedly collecting fan statements to further address the incident. The club’s security officials are reviewing mobile-phone video footage and gathering evidence of police conduct.

This incident adds to a history of clashes between Manchester United supporters and French police, including notable events in Marseille in 2011 and Lens in 2007, where fans reported heavy-handed tactics and unsafe conditions.

As the investigation continues, both fan organizations and the club are seeking accountability and improved safety measures for traveling supporters.
