Manchester United and Manchester City are reportedly set to compete for the signature of FC Porto’s standout goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, as both clubs consider significant changes between the posts ahead of the 2025–26 season.
United are evaluating Costa as a potential successor to André Onana, whose inconsistent performances since his €50 million move from Inter Milan have raised concerns at Old Trafford. The club’s interest in Costa dates back to last season, and scouts were present during Porto’s recent 2-0 victory over Vizela, where Costa kept a clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Manchester City are also monitoring Costa as a possible replacement for Ederson, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs. Manager Pep Guardiola is said to highly appreciate Costa’s talents and sees him as a suitable fit for City’s playing style.
Costa, 25, has a contract with Porto until 2027, which includes a €75 million release clause. While Porto are reportedly open to selling to balance their finances, Manchester City are hesitant to meet the full asking price, valuing Costa between €45 million and €50 million.
The Portuguese international has been a key figure for Porto, keeping 69 clean sheets in 165 appearances and winning multiple domestic titles. His impressive performances have also earned him accolades such as the Primeira Liga Goalkeeper of the Season and the Golden Glove.
As both Manchester clubs prepare for potential goalkeeper changes, the competition for Costa’s signature is expected to intensify in the upcoming transfer window.
