José Mourinho Poised to Become Brazil’s First Foreign Head Coach Amid CBF’s Strategic Overhaul

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is actively seeking a new head coach for the national team following the dismissal of Dorival Júnior on March 28, 2025, after a significant 4-1 defeat to Argentina. The CBF’s shortlist reportedly includes notable names such as Carlo Ancelotti, José Mourinho, Jorge Jesús, Abel Ferreira, and Filipe Luís.

Carlo Ancelotti, currently managing Real Madrid, has been a primary target for the CBF. However, his contractual obligations with the Spanish club present challenges to his potential appointment.

José Mourinho, presently at the helm of Fenerbahçe, has emerged as a candidate due to his extensive managerial experience. In January 2024, Mourinho addressed similar speculations, stating that he had not been contacted by the CBF and was focused on his role at AS Roma at that time. Given the current circumstances, it’s uncertain whether Mourinho has been approached recently regarding the Brazil position.

Other candidates include Jorge Jesús of Al Hilal and Abel Ferreira of Palmeiras. Both are engaged with their respective clubs, which could complicate immediate transitions. Filipe Luís, with recent successes at Flamengo, is also under consideration but may require more experience before taking on the national team role.

The CBF aims to appoint a new coach promptly, as the national team prepares for upcoming fixtures and the 2026 World Cup. The decision is critical, given the recent turnover in the coaching position and the high expectations associated with leading Brazil’s national team.
