Israel retakes Netzarim Corridor, again splitting Gaza in half

Israeli forces have retaken control of the Netzarim Corridor in Gaza, which had previously divided the territory, restricting Palestinian movement. This move follows Israel’s withdrawal from the area last month as part of a ceasefire agreement. Since the resumption of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza early Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reports at least 436 Palestinian casualties, including 183 children.

Despite the renewed bombing, Hamas official Taher al-Nono stated that the group is still open to negotiations, though he emphasized that existing agreements should be honored. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the current bombardment is “just the beginning,” and indicated that any future discussions regarding the ceasefire would occur “under fire.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry has updated the death toll to at least 61,700 Palestinians, with more than 112,700 wounded. Thousands are feared dead after being trapped under rubble, while the Gaza Government Media Office estimates that the actual number of fatalities could be even higher. In contrast, the Israeli death toll from the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks stands at 1,139, with over 200 individuals taken captive.
