The much-anticipated 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, aptly named “Gateway 2025,” is set to commence tomorrow, May 16, in Ogun State. This biennial event, often dubbed Nigeria’s “Olympics,” will run until May 30, bringing together over 12,000 athletes from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to compete across 32 sports disciplines.
The National Sports Festival was inaugurated in 1973 to promote unity and foster talent development across Nigeria. This year’s edition continues that legacy, with the Torch of Unity having traversed the nation before arriving in Ogun State, symbolizing national cohesion and the spirit of sportsmanship.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has expressed confidence in the state’s preparedness, highlighting significant investments in sports infrastructure, security, and logistics. “We are ready to host the 36 states and the FCT to a memorable Games like never before,” he stated. The M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, along with other venues, has been refurbished to meet international standards.
To inspire athletes and elevate the festival’s profile, Ogun State has appointed national sports icons such as Chief Segun Odegbami, Olympic gold medalist Tobi Amusan, and boxing champion Anthony Joshua as ambassadors for the Games.
Beyond the competitions, Gateway 2025 is expected to boost Ogun State’s economy significantly. Local businesses, especially in hospitality and tourism, anticipate increased patronage. The festival also offers an opportunity to showcase Ogun’s rich cultural heritage, from the historic Olumo Rock to the vibrant Adire markets in Abeokuta.
In a groundbreaking move, the festival will feature Invited Junior Athletes, young talents identified through the National Youth Games. This initiative aims to provide mentorship and exposure to budding athletes, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of sports talent for Nigeria.
As the countdown ends, all eyes turn to Ogun State for what promises to be a celebration of athletic prowess, unity, and cultural richness.
