FG Commences Construction of 2nd Niger Bridge Bypasses

The Federal Government has initiated the construction of two critical bypasses on the 2nd Niger Bridge, aiming to enhance connectivity between the Asaba-Benin and Enugu-Onitsha dual carriageways. This development follows the re-awarding of contracts for these bypasses, reflecting the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the South-South Geo-Political Zone.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, announced the project’s commencement during a meeting with the South-South Caucus of the 10th Assembly, Federal House of Representatives, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu approved the project to address longstanding road infrastructure deficiencies in the region.

Umahi also revealed that 30 percent mobilization funds have been released to contractors handling the bypasses, underscoring the administration’s dedication to timely project execution. He further assured that the completion of the 700 kilometers of the Lagos-Calabar road would be realized, with continued support.

The 2nd Niger Bridge, a significant infrastructure project, was officially handed over to the Federal Government by Julius Berger on December 3, 2023. The bridge aims to alleviate traffic congestion and boost economic activities in the region.

The construction of these bypasses is expected to further enhance the bridge’s utility, providing more efficient routes for motorists and contributing to the overall economic development of the South-South and South-East regions.
