Ex-German president Horst Koehler dies at 81

Horst Koehler, the former German president, passed away on February 1, 2025, at age 81.

Horst Koehler, the former president of Germany from 2004 to 2010,passed away on Saturday at the age of 81, according to presidential officials. According to a statement from the German presidency, “Koehler passed away early this morning in Berlin after a brief, serious illness surrounded by his family.”

Before becoming president, Köhler held various positions, including:

– President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development(1998-2000)

– Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (2000-2004)

– President of the German Savings Banks Association (1993-1998)

Following criticism for his comments regarding Germany’s military actions, Köhler resigned as president of Germany in 2010. On February 22, 1943, Horst Köhler was born in Skierbieszów, which was then a part of Nazi-occupied Poland. After relocating to Leipzig, East Germany, his German-descended family fled to West Germany in 1953.

Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, is where Köhler was raised. He received his doctorate in economics in 1977 after studying political science and economics at the University of Tübingen.
