CROSS RIVER SPORTS COMMISSIONER APPEALS FOR SUPPORT FOR ATHLETES

The Commissioner for Sports in Cross River State, Hon. Mrs. Agnes Atsu, has appealed to Cross Riverians to give their athletes the needed support and encouragement.

Speaking in a chat with FADFM correspondent, Mrs. Atsu expressed gratitude to the governor, His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and other stakeholders for their support after the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

She commended the athletes, coaches, and officials for their resilience and dedication, noting that despite challenges, they managed to bring home 17 medals, comprising 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 9 Bronze medals. Mrs. Atsu also appreciated athletes who have remained loyal to the state despite financial challenges, citing examples such as Patience Okon, King Kalu, Hope Udoka, and Offiong Edem.

The Commissioner emphasized the need to focus on developing the sports industry and human development, rather than just medals. She called on sports-loving individuals to develop sporting facilities in their communities to nurture raw talents and support the state’s athletes.

Mrs. Atsu also used the occasion to pray for the repose of the souls of the 21 Kano State athletes who lost their lives while returning from the festival, and for their families.

“We are still in the process of regaining the lost glory of Cross River State in the world of Sports, having been down for close to 16 years,” she said. “Let’s motivate them, rather than condemnation. We need to join hands with His Excellency to pray for the fortunes of Cross River to appreciate.”

The Commissioner expressed optimism that with the determination of the governor, the state will climb up the ladder of sports development, and appealed for collective support to achieve this goal.
