More than 150 passengers are feared missing after a boat accident in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The boat, carrying over 300 people—mostly women and children—capsized on Tuesday during a journey for a Maulid celebration.
The passengers were traveling from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community when the accident happened.
Alhaji Absullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident on Wednesday and said rescue operations are ongoing to find more survivors.
Baba-Arah explained, “The accident occurred around 8:30 pm on October 1, 2024, along River Niger, near Gbajibo Community. The boat was carrying around 300 passengers from Mundi to Gbajibo for the Maulid festival.”
Thanks to quick action by local volunteers, over 150 people have been rescued alive. Baba-Arah assured that search and rescue efforts, supported by local divers and volunteers, are continuing, with more updates to follow.
