The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have given the Federal Government a 14-day nationwide strike notice.
Their main grievance is the failure to implement the 16-point agreement between organized labor (NLC and TUC) and the Federal Government on October 2, 2023.
Leaders of the NLC and TUC express disappointment that, despite their efforts to maintain industrial peace, the government appears indifferent to the widespread suffering and hardship in the country.
The October 2 agreement aimed to address the significant suffering and adverse socioeconomic effects caused by the poorly conceived and executed IMF/World Bank-induced increase in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira. These policies have had dire economic consequences for the masses and workers of Nigeria, as predicted.
In a statement, the NLC and TUC lament that they are compelled to take such measures due to the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers, as well as the extensive hardship experienced.
Effective February 9 (tomorrow), the two Labor Centers declare, “Given this situation and recognizing the urgency of the matter and the need to protect and defend the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC hereby issue a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government to fulfill their part of the agreement within 14 days from tomorrow, the 9th day of February 2024.”
