Boston Celtics Sold to Massachusetts Native William Chisholm for Record-Breaking $6.1 Billion

The Boston Celtics, reigning NBA champions and holders of a record 18 league titles, have agreed to a landmark sale valued at $6.1 billion. This transaction, pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors, would set a new record for the most expensive purchase of a North American sports franchise, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.

The prospective buyer is William “Bill” Chisholm, co-founder of the private equity firm Symphony Technology Group and a Massachusetts native with lifelong ties to the Celtics. Chisholm expressed his deep-rooted passion for the team, stating, “Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life.”

Current majority owner Wyc Grousbeck, who led the acquisition of the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, will continue in his roles as CEO and Governor through the 2027-2028 NBA season. Grousbeck praised Chisholm’s dedication, noting his “love for the team and the city of Boston,” and highlighted the strong rapport between Chisholm and the existing Celtics leadership.

The ownership group poised to take over also includes prominent Boston business figures and philanthropists such as Rob Hale and Bruce A. Beal Jr. Chisholm emphasized his commitment to the community, acknowledging the unique role the Celtics play in Boston and expressing readiness to embrace the responsibilities of leadership within the organization.

This monumental sale reflects the escalating valuations of NBA franchises, driven by lucrative broadcasting deals and the league’s global popularity. The Celtics’ recent championship victory and their storied history have further enhanced the team’s market value, solidifying their status as one of the premier franchises in professional sports.
