The Commissioner for Information, Akwa Ibom State, Rt. Hon Aniekan Umanah has justified Governor Umo Eno’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move is in the best interest of the state.
Speaking during an interview session on FADFM radio, the Commissioner stated that the Governor’s decision was taken after due consultation with stakeholders and key figures in the state’s political landscape.
“The defection of the Governor is in the best interest of the state, and it is a position taken after due consultation,” the Commissioner said.
Umanah added that the state needed to strategically position itself to benefit from the federal government, emphasizing that Governor Eno has the backing of the entire Akwa Ibom people.
According to the Commissioner, the Governor’s decision to join the APC is a calculated move to ensure the state’s progress and development. “The state needed to strategically position itself to benefit from the federal government,” he said, highlighting the potential benefits of aligning with the ruling party.
The Commissioner also highlighted Governor Eno’s longstanding support for President Bola Tinubu, saying, “Umo has never hidden his support for Tinubu, he made it clear that he can’t support him while in the opposition.” When asked about the prospects of the Governor’s decision, the Commissioner confidently declared, “Umo Eno will win.”
The Governor’s defection to the APC has generated mixed reactions, with some residents expressing opposition to the move. However, the Commissioner insisted that Governor Eno’s decision enjoys widespread support across the state. “The Governor has the backing of the entire Akwa Ibom people,” he asserted.
The development comes as some commissioners in the state have reacted to the Governor’s defection, with two commissioners reaffirming their loyalty to Governor Eno and deciding to follow him to the APC.
