In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, Rt. Hon. (Rev) Francis Ejiroghene Waive, the All Progressives Congress (APC) representative for Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency, has hosted a gathering of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who recently defected to the APC. During the event, Waive declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the sole APC governorship candidate for Delta State in the upcoming elections.
Waive lauded Governor Oborevwori’s leadership and developmental strides since assuming office, emphasizing that his governance has positively impacted the lives of Deltans. He highlighted Oborevwori’s strong relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that this synergy is crucial for the state’s progress. “Governor Oborevwori’s excellent relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shows a man who knows what governance is all about,” Waive stated. “His performance in office has been outstanding, with people-oriented programmes and quality projects that have positively impacted Deltans.”
The lawmaker emphasized the importance of unity within the APC, suggesting that adopting Oborevwori as the party’s candidate would not only bring peace to the party but also secure a decisive victory in the 2027 elections. “This synergy is what APC Delta needs at this moment. Not only will it bring peace to the party, but it will also make victory certain,” Waive asserted.
Governor Oborevwori’s recent defection from the PDP to the APC, along with his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and other key PDP stakeholders, has been described as a “political tsunami” that has reshaped Delta State’s political landscape. The move effectively ended the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the state and has been hailed by APC leaders as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
President Bola Tinubu, speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, welcomed the defectors, stating that they are now co-owners of the APC, not mere guests. He praised the defection as a historic movement that underscores the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda in driving growth and development in Nigeria.
However, the PDP has expressed strong opposition to the defections, threatening legal action against Governor Oborevwori and others who left the party. The party’s National Working Committee has directed its legal adviser to initiate proceedings to reclaim what it terms the party’s stolen mandate in Delta State.
As the political realignment unfolds, all eyes are on Delta State’s APC as it navigates internal dynamics and prepares for the 2027 general elections with Governor Oborevwori at the helm.
