NCDC Visits Obong of Calabar, Commends Cross River State for prompt Response.

Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday visited the Obong of Calabar at his country home to pay homage before proceeding to inspect the 100 beds Isolation centre at Adiabo.

The team had a brief presentation at Ministry of Health Headquarters before being taken round to inspect health facilities by Cross River State Covid-19 Response Team led by the Chairman and Health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu and the Secretary, Commissioner for Finance Mr Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr.

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V who received the team in his country home at Adiabo, appreciated the Governor, Sir Ben Ayade for his prompt & proactive intervention by setting up a strong team on time to tackle the virus. He assured that as far as Cross River State is concerned, there is no one that is unaware of the Coronavirus pandemic due to the sensitization and engagements efforts of communities by the traditional institutions.

The Obong appealed for test centres to be set up by Federal Government so that massive testing can be carried out as part of containment measures. The treaty King tasked NCDC and FG to ensure that Nigeria comes out victorious at the end.

Dr Omobolanle Olowu the team lead from the Presidential Task Force said she was very impressed with the proactive efforts of Cross River State Government in responding to the pandemic. She went on to commend the Governor of Cross River State, Sir Ben Ayade, and his energetic team who initiated the State’s response in January when others still lived in denial. Accordong to her, Cross River State deserves to still be without a case of Covid-19 especially through the State proactive & preventive methodology in shutting down borders, screening of visitors and suspected cases and leading the no mask no movement campaign in Nigeria.

“We will tell Mr President what we have seen and how the can patronize the garment factory, we need to make Cross River state garment factory our campaign song so Africa can know the can get these items here. Patronizing the garment factory in calabar will stimulate the economy now and post COVID-19 era” she said.

Cross River State Commissioner for Health and Chairman of the Cross River State Response Taskforce, Dr Betta Edu appealed for capacity building in the area of surveillance to prevent uncontrolled migration of people into the state, as well as the establishment of a vaccine research and production factory in the state. She noted that Cross River State will continue to work to ensure the state remained Covid-19 free.

Disclosing how far Cross River State have gone in prevention and economic solutions associated with the pandemic, the Commissioner for Finance and Secretary of the Taskforce on Covid-19 Response, Mr Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr in his remarks said the State Government had set up border surveillance teams manned by members of the State Executive Council, face mask compliance teams in the various urban centers in the State as well as the production of PPEs at the Garment Factory which in turn has generated local employment opportunities. He used the opportunity to eulogise the Obong of Calabar for his pragmatic effort towards sensitizing the people.

The NCDC team also visited the 100 bed isolation Centre at Adiabo, country home of the Obong of Calabar where it was certified good and of standard for Covid-19 response.
